The next Illawarra Kareelah Orienteering event will be  held on Saturday 17 April 2010 at Cordeaux Heights. Details

Illawarra Kareelah Orienteering Club was formed in 2000 following the merger of the Illawarra and Kareelah clubs.  The club serves orienteers principally from the St George, Sutherland and Wollongong areas south of Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Orienteering is a navigation running sport suitable for 8 to 70+ year olds, where competitors choose the best route between check points printed on a map using their navigation abilities and often a compass.  Events are held in bushland areas as well as suburban areas. The suburban events are held in parks and local roads, and are a good way to see the local area.

Usually the fastest time wins, although most people enjoy the fitness and social aspects of the sport.  Most events have different categories for different age groups and abilities. You don't have to run, walkers are welcome.

Orienteering does not require fancy or expensive equipment. The basic equipment required is running or walking shoes, comfortable clothes, a water bottle & hat (if hot) and a compass (for bush events). If you don't know how to use a compass, please ask a club member at a event.
